Spider-Man 4 has a release date, but it will also be in 3-D when it comes out. The 3-D version of Spider-Man 4 has a release date of July 3rd, 2012, and Sony Pictures is hoping that the toned down re-boot of the
franchise will turn into box office gold for them. In recent years the fourth of July weekend has been reserved for hotly anticipated blockbusters, most of them costing hundreds of millions of dollars, but in the summer of 2012 a much cheaper version of Spider-Man 4 will be hitting theaters. The early rumors have Spider-Man 4 only getting an $80 million budget, and that could be one of the main reasons that many of the key components have walked out the door.

So what are the key components that will be missing? Stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst won't be back and neither will Director Sam Raimi. This is going to be a complete re-birth of the Spider-Man franchise, and calling it Spider-Man 4 is a bit misleading, as they will be casting a new Spider-Man, new villains, and of course a new love interest. At least Spider-Man 4 has a new director on board as Marc Webb will be coming over to take the reins of this franchise. Webb is best known for directing (500) Days of Summer and will be working with a script from James Vanderbilt in this fourth major Spider-Man movie since 2002.

Sony is really taking a gamble that fans will stick around with the franchise even through a major cast shake-up such as this one. Some might point to the success that Batman had when Christopher Nolan took over, but that had been a revolving door franchise where each film ended up with someone new trying to create success. The first three Spider-Man films have had all the same major components, and though Spider-Man 3 may not have been that great, it still kept the story moving forward. Now Sony wants fans to forget Spider-Man 3 as well as the first two films, and to spend their money on a 3-D Spider-Man movie. Does Spider-Man 4 really need to be 3-D to keep interest high?

Spider-Man 4's release date is July 3rd, 2012.
