Survivor Series – Afterthoughts

After a few abysmal PPVs, WWE did one hell of a job with the Survivor Series. I found the show to be highly entertaining. There were a few surprises as well as a lot of what I had already expected. The team aspect of the show gave numerous superstars either their first PPV appearance, or their first in a while. It was obvious that everyone was trying to use their screen time to the best of their ability.

Am I the only one annoyed by how they kept pluralizing “sole survivor”? “Sole” means only. Does anyone remember the movie “Airheads”? It was a running joke that the band was called “The Lone Rangers”. You just can’t pluralize the object of a singular adjective. It just doesn’t work. I believe it’s called an oxymoron.

I went 4 for 6 in my predictions, however, I’m really happy I was wrong in those two instances.

Team Miz vs. Team Morrison

This is one of the matches I was wrong in predicting the winning team. I couldn’t have been happier that Team Miz picked up the win. My biggest disappointment of the night however, was that Dolph Ziggler was the first to be eliminated. I really hope that they figure out what the hell they want to do with him. After taking it to Evan Bourne, he was pinned following some good teamwork between Matt Hardy and Evan Bourne. I’m under the impression that tonight’s Thanksgiving show is tri-branded, so maybe Ziggler will meet Bourne 1-on-1 for a little redemption. I could be wrong about it being all three brands though.

In the end it was Miz, McIntyre, and Sheamus standing tall. I couldn’t have been more surprised that Sheamus, of all people, was the one to pin Morrison. For all the hype the WWE has been giving Morrison, I really thought he’d avenge his Bragging Rights loss. Miz seems to be in a great spot right now. Let’s hope his momentum keeps going. By the way, I haven’t heard an official name for Sheamus’ Razor’s Edge finisher yet. Isn’t it kind of a given that it be called the Celtic Cross?

One other thing that stood out in the match was that there was no real progression of the Miz/Swagger story. I expected one of them to cause the other’s elimination.

Team Kofi’s backstage segment was great. I was really hoping that they’d make light out of the “only white guy” status of Christian, and they didn’t let me down.

Batista vs. Rey Mysterio

As I expected, Batista destroyed Rey. Now word comes out that Rey is headed to the operating room once again. Anyone surprised? While I don’t wish horrible things upon Mysterio, I enjoy when he’s injured. That way, I can watch whichever show he’s on and not have to see his tired routine for a while. Did anyone else notice the crowd chanting, “One more time!” during the dismantling of Mysterio? I guess the hometown is still behind Batista, or I’m not the only one that’s had enough of Rey.

Team Orton vs. Team Kofi

The match started out with teams quickly dwindling down. Things got really good when it was down to Orton/CM Punk and Kofi/Christian. Christian looked really good against both Punk and Orton. After Christian was eliminated, Orton tagged in Punk and dropped to the floor. Punk and Kingston worked really well together. If tonight is tri-branded, I’d be more than happy to see these two go at it again. Kofi continued down his main-event road after rolling up Punk, and hitting a quick Trouble in Paradise on Orton for the 1,2,3.

This is another big step in the right direction for Kofi. WWE is putting a lot of faith in him as of late and the fans are really behind him. He anyone down yet, so let’s hope it stays that way. If they can keep this up, he’ll be WWE champion within a year or less. Since they dropped the Jamaican gimmick, I think it’s time Kofi gets some new entrance music. Anyone agree with me on that?

Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho vs. The Big Show

This match didn’t end with any surprises, but I really didn’t expect it to anyway. I think it was a solid match. I was glad to see Show tap in the end as opposed to Jericho doing the job again.

I know we all heard the banter between Jericho and the fan that said, "Go back to Toronto!" only for Jericho to respond, "I'm from Winnipeg, you idiot.". Damn, Jericho's awesome.

Have triple threat matches always been no-DQ? Cole kept mentioning that the match was anything goes. I understand you can’t have two winners so it’s impossible to disqualify someone to end the match. Couldn’t the ref DQ one guy and send him to the back though?

I’ve heard that Show is going to be getting surgery soon. I wonder what this holds for the Unified Tag Team Champions. I’d rather they don’t drop the titles because Jericho is a huge part of both shows. Does this mean Jericho will have to find another partner again? If that were the case, I’d wholly expect Edge and Show to team up when they return and win the belts from Jericho and whoever he might team with.

The Miz, Sheamus, and Drew McIntyre did a backstage promo that wasn’t anything special. It was the standard “look what we just did” fare, but came off well.

Team Mickie vs. Team McCool

I’d be lying if I said I watched this match. By the time I got to this point it was almost 3 in the morning. On top of that, I needed to wake up early today for someone to come and fix our furnace. Being without heat for 5 days sucks. It’s bad enough when my landlord never answers her phone. When I eventually do get in contact with her, she loves to procrastinate getting things done.

I stopped fast forwarding just in time to see the ending. I’m glad Mickie’s team won. It was baffling to me that Melina got the deciding pinfall. It would’ve made a lot more sense if Mickie had picked up the win.

John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
WWE Championship

I was on the verge of falling asleep during the entrances. I thought it was odd that DX entered together. I know they’re a stable, but they’re opponents. They should’ve come down separately to their own music.

Luckily, I was awoken by Sweet Chin Music at the very beginning of the match that sent HHH out of the ring. I figured DX would come to blows, but not that soon. It helped to differentiate this match from the earlier triple threat. If they had just double teamed Cena most of the time it would’ve been the same song and dance.

HHH stayed out of commission for a while, leaving HBK and the champion to go at it. Eventually, HHH made it to his feet and delivered a spinebuster to HBK on the announce table. Then it was HHH’s turn to go 1-on-1 with the champ.

Eventually, HBK got back into the action. Near falls, and finshers all over the place led to Cena disposing of DX in similar fashion to how he defeated Edge and Big Show at this years Wrestlemania.

In the end, I’d say the show was definitely worth my fiancé’s brother’s $40. Gotta send out a thanks to him again for coming through with the tape the same night of the event.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s show. I had one of my employees call off this evening so I’m stuck working a 12 ˝ hour shift today. Good thing my DVR is all set to record the show. After staying up late last night I’m assuming it’s going to be hard to stay awake for a 3-hour show. At least my oldest daughter doesn’t have school this week. I’ll be able get a little sleep before my scheduled 12 ˝ hour day tomorrow.

I should be able to get my Raw column done by the end of the day Wednesday if I’m not too busy.

A quick closing question: Does anyone know if tonight’s Raw is tri-branded? I think it is but I’m not 100% sure.
